Abstract

This paper analyzes O Desertor (1774), by Silva Alvarenga (1749–1814), based on the rhetorical-poetic conventions of the eighteenth century, observing the deformation of the epic in the mock-heroic poem and its effects of meaning. It discusses how the work mobilizes precepts of moral philosophy, comedy, and satire to represent Gonçalo and Tibúrcio in distinct ways. Drawing, among others, on the works of Freire (1759), Hansen (2008; 2011), and Teixeira (1999), it argues that the urbanity applied to Gonçalo preserves the symbolic space of the hero as a corrective standard, while the maledicence directed at Tibúrcio figures the opposing force to the Pombaline reform of education.
