James Joyce, erotic and melancholic (epistolary) poet

James Joyce’s erotic correspondence is read according to an articulation between eroticism and melancholy, in which lyricism contributes to giving body to desire. Based on a theorization of melancholy as a manifestation of loss and of poetic discourse as an attempt to recover the lost object, founded on Freud and Kristeva, we propose that the lack of the beloved leads Joyce to engage in erotic-poetic writing to summon her image, resulting in a series of ambivalences that bind both the figuration of the woman and the epistolary text. Spiritual and carnal love are integrated in a dual rhythm that textually inscribes the ambivalences of the melancholic temperament.
