Ekphrasis, Roman Epic, Statius, ThebaidAbstract
In this article I bring out and analyze three instances of ekphrasis in the Thebaid. Firstly, I demonstrate the way ekphrasis belongs as a poetic device in the long tradition of authors who Statius painstakingly emulated. I then examine ekphrasis as a poetic device prior to the tentative and various rhetoric formulations which it has been given since ancient times.
