Abstract

This article demonstrates the epic nature of the Samba-Enredo songs from Imperatriz Leopoldinense. These are musical poems, leading the way in carnival parades. In the Sapucaí, Imperatriz Leopoldinense usually tells stories. It narrates Brazilian historical episodes, cultural adventures, and ancestral myths. Thus, I analyze the songs: 1) João e Marias, from 2008; 2) O aperreio do cabra que o excomungado tratou com má-querença e o santíssimo não deu guarida, champion of 2023, and 3) Ómi Tútú ao Olúfon - Água Fresca Para o Senhor de Ifón, from 2025. The analysis proposes that the category of samba-enredo is a genre that subverts and updates the epic, as it relates to the categories of the hero's fable and sublime elocution.
