“Thy kingdom come destroyed”: narrative visions of the apocalypse in Jeremias o louco by José Agostinho Baptista

This article seeks to situate José Agostinho Baptista’s jeremias o louco (1978) within a broad range of processes of reconfiguration of the literary text in the 1970s and at the intersection of these with the 25 April 1974 Revolution. It thus explores the various genealogies (the Beat Generation, Modernism, the Bible) that underpin the construction of the narrative poem, drawing on a theoretical framework that combines critical theory of contemporary Portuguese literature (Arnaut, Reis, Lourenço, Júdice) with the theory of the Apocalypse in literature (Rosen, Ostriker, Berger).
