Improvised rhymes on São Paulo’s trains: poetry and urban circulation

Abstract

This article aims to analyze improvised rhymes in the São Paulo Metro in relation to their presence within the city and the metro transportation system. In this study, this artistic practice is understood as one of the manifestations of oral tradition in Brazil. Thus, the text investigates how this performative poetics engages both with the practice of oral poetry and with the dynamics of urban life. This approach is based on the assumption that performance is inseparable from the space in which it takes place. Therefore, a performance carried out in the city not only relates to space but is also constituted by it.
