Describing the role of petites revues at the end of the 19th century, Yoan Vérilhac states that, beyond establishing bonds of sociability among literary figures, it is within these journals that the ideas of originality and innovation most strongly influence the creative process of their contributors. Building on this premise, the aim of this article is to explore how these aspects manifest themselves in the writings of Judith Gautier and Maria Clara da Cunha Santos by comparing their critical essays on the arts and prose poems published in the literary magazines La Renaissance littéraire et artistique and A Mensageira, respectively.
