In the 1970s, the Brazilian poet João Cabral de Melo Neto (1920-1999) worked as an ambassador in Dakar (Senegal). Given the distance from Brazil, Inez Cabral (1948-), the poet’s daughter, sent her writer father some photographs of the two years old Dandara, Inez’s daughter. Motivated by these photographs, João Cabral elaborated a small handmade book with poems about his little granddaughter, which was published posthumously in 2011. In this paper, we aim to study precisely the relationship between these Dandara’s photographs and the poems based on them. Some analytical-critical contributions to our research: Merquior (1996), Kossoy (2020), Saraiva (2014), Secchin (1999), and Toscano (2017).
