The article makes a critical presentation of Maciel de Aguiar’s poetry, situating his work in the truculence period of the Brazilian military regime. We observe that his poems have a lot in common with other works that assumed a role of resistance against the dictatorship– such as the testimonial character and the denunciation of the atrocities committed by political repression – but, on the other hand, these poems show a monumental dimension, breaking with the tendency to fragmentation visible in several of his contemporaries with the same political and aesthetic inclination. In this way, we discuss how the poet formulates a testimonial poetry that seeks to create a totalizing picture of life in the country during the military regime, in its various aspects and contradictions.
