The sea is an important element in Natália Correia’s poetry, since it inspires and conditions her poetical expression. Born on the island of S. Miguel, in 1923, from where she left at the age of eleven to settle in Lisbon, Natália uses the sea to recover memories and understand the meaning of her own existence. Thus, the sea configures her identity as a poet, because in it she sees a strong connection of belonging. It is on the umbilical relationship that is created between Natália Correia’s poetry and the sea that this study focuses. It will seek to demonstrate, through the analysis of a selected corpus of poems, published at different times, that Natália Correia is, according to her words, “half female half sea like mermaids.”
