From Bandeira to Craveiro: poetry,circumstance and politics

Abstract

The article analyzes the poem “Craveiro, dá-me uma rosa”, by Manuel Bandeira. The poem was published for the first time in 1957, in Revista Anhembi, and was later collected in the collection of circumstance poems Mafuá do Malungo. The text is a response to the visit to Brazil by General Craveiro Lopes, then president of Portugal. The purpose of the article is to discuss, based on the analysis of the poem and journalistic texts from the time of its writing, the aesthetic reach of circumstance poetry and the relationships between poetry and politics, with a special focus on the work of Manuel Bandeira.
