Wars, barricades and child labor: the sad reality of children in Victor Hugo’s poetry

Despite having described, in many of his verses, childhood as a period of beauty and joy, Victor Hugo also used his poems to warn against the terrible conditions in which children lived, victims of wars, hard work and, mainly due to the neglect of the powerful, who became rich through child exploitation. In this article, we intend to analyze three poems by Victor Hugo in which the right to freedom and life itself is discussed and remembered. The conclusion reached is that Hugo’s poetry is an instrument of denunciation and awareness.
